Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Frozen Morning Amsterdam

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting has a striking wintry character, built from white, silver-grey, charcoal, and black, warmed by small accents of copper, terracotta, and blush pink. The composition is made of overlapping vertical and rectangular shapes, like panes of glass, layered walls, or a city seen through a frosted window. Dark black and charcoal forms gather on the left of centre, with softer, irregular edges like shadows or ink blots, and smaller dark shapes repeat across the middle and lower right. Short white horizontal dashes cut through them in places, like light through shutters. The warm notes are scattered throughout: copper and burnt orange in small blocks and flecks, strongest along the right edge, with soft blush pink in the centre and lower left. They add warmth to an otherwise cool palette, like lamplight glowing behind ice. The texture is the most distinctive feature. Large areas are covered in fine raised patterns: crackled, net-like veins in the centre and right, and feathery, fern-like marks on the left and right edges. They look exactly like frost crystals forming on a cold window. The paint is layered with knife and brush, with some areas smooth and dragged and others pressed into delicate relief, so the surface changes as light moves across it. It reads as frost flowers on a window on a winter morning, a frozen city seen through glass, or the patterns of ice on an old canal house window.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
