Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Blush Dawn at Sea

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting is a soft, textured seascape at the turn of the day. The upper half is a sky of blush pink, peach, and white, with touches of powder blue and slate along the edges, laid in short horizontal strokes like thin cloud at sunrise. A loose horizon runs across the middle, marked by dark navy streaks on the right and charcoal on the left. Below it, gold and ochre spread across the water in broken patches, with brighter lemon yellow in the centre and lower left, like the sun’s reflection on the surface. Bronze and caramel tones mix in on the right. The lower half turns cooler and more turbulent: cobalt, denim blue, navy, and black, broken by bright white strokes like foam or light on ripples. The bottom edge is busy with white and dark blue, like waves washing toward the shore. The paint is applied thickly with a palette knife in short, horizontal drags, so every band has ragged, textured edges and the layers show through one another. It reads as a sunrise over the sea, pink sky with golden light on the water, or a coastal morning after a stormy night.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
