Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Gold Boathouse

This tall painting has a calm, weathered elegance, in a palette of seafoam, teal, and jade mixed with warm greige, taupe, soft brown, and touches of metallic gold. The upper half is pale and hazy. A large area of white and cream glows on the left like light through mist or a bright window, while the upper right is warmer, with gold and ochre dragged downward over taupe and brown, like sunlit stone or old gilded walls. Teal shows through in streaks along the top and right edge. Right of centre, a dark block of brown and charcoal sits like a boat, a jetty, or a small building at the water’s edge. Bold strokes of gold run across it, and a white shape rests on top, like a sail or a patch of light. Smaller gold patches repeat on the left at the same level, forming a loose horizon. The lower half is the water. Teal, seafoam, and soft grey are pulled sideways and downward, with brown reflections and a bright splash of white on the right, like light breaking on ripples. The paint is scraped and dragged with a knife, mostly vertically, so the canvas weave shows through and the layers look aged and softly textured. It reads as a quiet mooring on a misty morning, an old boathouse reflected in a lake, or a harbour wall touched by gold light.
