Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Storm and Sun

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

This painting is bold and full of contrast. The upper half glows with bright lemon yellow fading into pale cream and white, like a sky lit by strong sun. The lower half is dark and turbulent, filled with navy, deep blue, black, and dark brown, broken by sweeps of white and pale blue. Between the two, a heavy band of brown and charcoal arcs across the canvas from the upper left, like a ridge or a wave about to break. Below it, the paint twists and curls in thick, energetic strokes. A white S-shaped curve winds through the centre, and white rises on the right like foam. A dark vertical shape stands at the left edge, and small flecks of white are scattered across the dark areas like spray. The paint is laid on very thick with a palette knife, in long, confident sweeps that leave raised ridges and clean edges. You can follow the direction of every stroke, which gives the painting its sense of speed and force. It reads as a stormy sea under a blazing sky, waves crashing on rocks at sunrise, or a river rushing through a valley in bright light.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
