Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Shoreline at Dawn

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This is a calm, realistic beach scene under a wide, moving sky. The sky takes up most of the canvas. At the top, heavy clouds in charcoal, slate, and silver-grey roll across in soft, sweeping strokes, with a few brighter white patches where the light breaks through. Toward the horizon, the sky opens up. Bands of soft lemon yellow, cream, and pale peach stretch across it, with a touch of coral on the right, like the glow of a sunrise or sunset behind the clouds. A thin, dark wavy streak of cloud curves through the yellow, echoing the shape of the shoreline below. At the bottom, a narrow strip of sea in blue-grey and teal meets the beach. A line of white surf curves in from the left and runs along the dark, wet sand, which is painted in brown and near-black. Thin white lines on the water suggest small waves rolling in. The paint is applied smoothly with a brush and blended softly throughout, so the scene feels quiet and atmospheric, with gentle movement in the clouds and the surf. It reads as a North Sea beach at dawn or dusk, with the storm clouds lifting and the first light breaking along the horizon.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
