Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Amber Tree

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting stands out for its texture. The whole surface is covered in thick, sculpted paint that has been pressed and pulled into raised ridges and cells, like crackled glaze, tree bark, frosted glass, or the veins of a leaf. In the upper part, the ridges fan out in long curves, as if radiating from a point near the top right. The colours sit beneath and within this texture. Soft sky blue fills the left side, curving up toward the top like an open sky. The rest of the canvas is a warm neutral of champagne, taupe, and khaki, with pearly white highlights catching the light on the raised edges. On the right and centre, warm colour glows through: amber, honey gold, burnt orange, and soft rust, gathered in a tall shape that rises from the bottom toward the middle. It looks like an autumn tree, a flame, or sunlight breaking through the textured surface. Small patches of white near its upper edge add brightness. The thick, relief-like paint gives the piece a strong physical presence, and it will change a lot as light moves across it during the day. It reads as an autumn tree against a pale sky, sunlight seen through frosted glass, or the patterns of nature captured in stone.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
