Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Golden Evening Sea

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting is a calm, horizontal seascape with clean bands of colour stacked from top to bottom. The upper half is a bright sky of white, cream, and soft blush, streaked with golden yellow and apricot, with small glimpses of pale aqua showing through. The paint is dragged sideways in long, feathery strokes, like thin clouds lit by the sun. Through the middle, the gold deepens and becomes the strongest band in the painting, a rich mustard and ochre glow that sits just above the horizon like the last light of evening. Beneath it, darker streaks of brown and plum lead into a solid band of deep aubergine and wine red, then a thin line of navy that marks the horizon. The lower third is sea, in bright turquoise and cerulean blue, with long horizontal strokes of white and soft gold reflecting the sky. The paint is applied with a palette knife in smooth, wide sweeps, so the bands are clean and flowing, with gentle broken edges where one colour meets the next. It reads as a sunset over a calm sea, a summer evening on the coast, or golden light lingering over still water.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
