Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Evening Sea

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

The landscape strongly resembles the sea beach, above it all is a bright turquoise sky filled with soft, voluminous white clouds, giving the piece a bright, airy backdrop that contrasts with the dense blue detail belowThe overall palette is warm gold/ochre/sienna against blue for the sky — a classic complementary color scheme that makes the beach artwork classic. Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

A flat, open sea stretches to a clear horizon just above the middle, under a wide, glowing sky. The sky is bright on the left and stormy on the right. Soft white cloud fills the upper left, warmed by peach and apricot where the sun shines through, while on the right the clouds darken into slate blue and teal, sweeping diagonally as if weather were rolling in. Just above the horizon, a band of smoky plum, rust, and grey lies across the sky like a low cloud bank. The horizon is a thin, pale line of light. Below it, the sea picks up the sky’s colours: soft pink and copper on the left where the sunlight reflects, and deep teal and navy on the right. Gentle ripples of white and pale blue run across the water toward the viewer. The sky is smoothly blended with a brush, while the ripples are added in short, crisp strokes. It reads as the North Sea at evening, the sun breaking through just as a storm moves in.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
