Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Break in the Storm

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting is dramatic and almost otherworldly. Heavy storm clouds in charcoal, slate, and plum close in from the sides and top, lit along their edges with deep rust red and terracotta, as if glowing from a hidden sunset. In the centre, the sky breaks open into a bright, luminous space of pale lime, soft yellow-green, and cream. The light pours down through the gap like a beam, spreading outward and illuminating the scene below. Below the horizon, a winding body of water reflects that glow. It curves through the lower half like a river or an estuary, painted in lime, mint, pale yellow, and white, with touches of turquoise. Dark land frames it on both sides, in black, deep blue, and rust red, with patches of orange catching the light along the banks. The sky and water are softly blended with a brush, while the clouds and edges have more texture, giving the scene depth and movement. It reads as light breaking through a storm over a river valley, an estuary at dusk, or a moment of hope after a dark day.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
