Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I River of Gold

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting is built around a single, bold diagonal. A wide band of dark texture runs from the upper left corner down to the lower right, like a river of rock or a seam of ore cutting through the canvas. Within this band, the colours are rich and earthy: charcoal, smoky grey, bronze, and dark brown, with bright golden yellow glinting through in clusters, like gold nuggets or sunlight catching on stone. Toward the lower right, the band warms into copper and burnt orange. On either side, the background is soft and airy. Pale aqua, seafoam, and duck-egg blue fill the lower left and the upper right, blended with white and silver-grey, and a touch of cream in the top right corner. These areas feel calm and misty, like water or sky. The texture is the standout feature. The dark diagonal band is heavily raised, with crumpled, crinkled ridges of paint that look almost like bark, lava rock, or crushed foil. The background is smoother and softly brushed, which makes the central band stand out even more. It reads as a golden riverbed seen from above, a vein of gold in stone, or the Milky Way stretching across a misty sky.

his painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
