Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Petals on the Water

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting is joyful and romantic, built around a bold diagonal band of colour that sweeps from the upper left corner down toward the lower right, like a garland of flowers or a drift of petals carried on the wind. The background is soft and dreamy: blush pink, lilac, and pale cream blended together, lighter toward the right edge and warmer toward the bottom left, with a hint of peach. Inside the diagonal band, the colour is vivid and dense. Hot pink and magenta flare out in loose, flower-like shapes, with deep crimson and burgundy at their hearts. Bright lemon yellow appears in several patches, near the top centre, on the left, and on the right, like sunlight or yellow blooms. Clear sky blue runs beneath and between them, especially along the lower edge of the band, with touches of white like reflections or petals on water. Thin drips of pink and burgundy run down from the colour toward the bottom of the canvas, especially on the left, which adds a soft, rainy movement. The paint is laid on with brush and palette knife, thick in the flowers and thinner in the background, so the colour seems to float on a misty surface. It reads as a bouquet spilling across the canvas, a flower market reflected in a canal, or spring blossom falling onto water.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
