Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Frozen Canal by Night

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting is deep and luminous, built almost entirely from blue and gold. The colour moves from pale, frosty powder blue and white at the top, through bright cobalt and ultramarine in the middle, to dark navy and near-black along the bottom edge. It feels like looking down into deep water, or through a frozen window at night. Metallic gold is scattered across the canvas in small, broken patches. It appears as thin streaks near the top, clusters on the right side, and a scattering across the lower half and along the left edge. Against the dark blue it glints like lamplight on water, stars in a winter sky, or gold leaf showing through. Texture is again the defining feature, as in “Frost Flowers”. Fine raised lines spread across the whole surface in fan-like, veined patterns that look like frost crystals forming on glass or ice cracking on a canal. Darker blue shapes hang down from the upper middle like icicles or reflections, and the raised ridges catch the gold and the light. The paint is blended softly between the tones, so the cool blues merge smoothly while the texture and gold sit on top, giving the surface depth and a quiet shimmer. It reads as a frozen canal at night under lamplight, ice on dark water, or a winter sky full of stars.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
