Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Spring Garden

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting is fresh and full of spring light. The palette moves through bright greens, soft yellows, warm cream, and cool grey, with small touches of ochre and gold. Vivid grass green and emerald fill the upper right corner and spread across the lower left, like dense leaves or a sunny lawn. Between them, lemon yellow and pale lime glow through the upper left and centre, softened by large areas of cream and off-white that feel like mist or sunlight. Grey adds weight and calm. Two dark grey shapes sit in the middle, one on the left and one in the centre, like stones or shadows in water, and a soft grey haze drifts through the right side. Near the bottom, a pale cream patch flecked with ochre sits like a bright clearing, with more golden flecks scattered to the right. The paint is thick and textured throughout, pressed on with a knife so the surface is pitted and stippled, catching the light. The colours blend softly at their edges, which keeps the overall feeling gentle and airy. It reads as a garden pond in spring, stones in a sunlit stream, or a meadow seen through morning haze.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
