Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Silk in the Wind

This painting shares its palette with “Breaking Light”, with the same burgundy, red, violet, and gold against soft white, but here the colour moves in curving, swirling strokes from both upper corners toward the centre. White and soft cloud fill most of the canvas, flowing down through the middle and spreading across the lower half, with faint touches of pale blue, blush pink, and lemon yellow drifting through it like mist or light. The darker, richer colour gathers in the upper left and upper right. On the left, deep maroon and near-black curve around in broad arcs, with bright scarlet red, violet, and golden yellow laid over them in thick, sweeping strokes. On the right, a similar mass of burgundy and dark wine is lit by bold strokes of red, magenta-purple, and soft peach. In the centre left, a curved stroke of violet and charcoal sits above a strong patch of mustard yellow, like a petal or a flame. The paint is applied with confident, curved brush and knife strokes, thick where the colour is strong and softly blended in the white areas, which gives the painting a flowing, dance-like movement. It reads as flowers opening in a breeze, silk scarves caught in the wind, or a burst of colour rising through cloud.
