Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Bloom in the Dark

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting has a burst of bright colour at its centre, surrounded by a dark, blurred background. The edges are smooth and moody, in charcoal, deep grey, and olive green, with soft vertical streaks of moss green and dusty pink fading in and out, like shapes seen through rain or a long-exposure photograph. In the middle, the colour comes alive. Vivid scarlet and red-orange spread out in thick patches, with bright marigold yellow and warm orange gathering in the lower right of the cluster. Lime and olive green appear around them, and thick strokes of white sit on the left and upper right, like light breaking through. Small black marks and shadows run between the colours, giving them depth. The contrast in technique is striking. The central burst is laid on thickly with a palette knife, rough and textured, while the background is smoothly blended and dragged vertically, so the bright colours seem to float in front of a soft, dark space. It reads as a bouquet of flowers in a dark room, autumn leaves in the rain, or city lights glowing through a misty night.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
