Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Tidewash

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This is an abstract painting in a customise fromat, built from three colours: turquoise-teal, mustard yellow, and a dominant chalky white. The composition has a loose diagonal movement. A wedge of ochre descends from the top centre, flanked by broken fields of turquoise that spread down the right side. A second patch of yellow sits on the left edge, and scattered flecks of gold and teal trail off toward the bottom. White is doing most of the work. It reads less as background and more as a top layer dragged over the colour, breaking it into fractured, lace-like shapes. The effect is weathered and organic: it suggests sea foam over shallow water, peeling plaster, lichen on stone, or a coastline seen from above. The lower third is quieter, with soft beige and grey smears that give the eye a place to rest.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
