Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Golden Horizon

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This is the calmest painting of the set, and the closest to a landscape. It is organised in horizontal bands, with a clear horizon line running across the middle. Above it, soft golden yellow glows through white and pale grey, like sun behind thin cloud. Below it, the tones cool into silvery grey, taupe, and brown, with the paint dragged sideways in long, flat strokes. The palette is restrained: gold, white, grey, and brown, with one dark accent of near-black at the bottom centre that anchors the whole composition. A patch of gold returns in the lower right corner, like light catching on wet sand or water, and it balances the glow in the upper left. The canvas weave shows through in many places, which gives the surface a dry, weathered look. The overall feeling is quiet and spacious: a beach at low tide, a misty estuary, or a pale winter sunrise over flat land.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
