Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Windows on the Water

This painting is soft and nostalgic, in a palette of terracotta, salmon, dusty rose, and pale sky blue, with cream and white throughout. It has the feel of an old brick town of Netherlands reflected in still water. The upper and left parts are warmer. Terracotta, coral, and rust gather in horizontal patches, with darker streaks of brown and black in the upper left and across the middle left, like rooftops, walls, or the outlines of buildings blurred by reflection. Soft peach and blush spread across the top right. The lower half and right side cool into pale powder blue and white, laid in horizontal strokes like calm water or a hazy sky. The most distinctive feature is three small dark brown squares on the right side, arranged in a loose diagonal from the middle right down toward the bottom centre. Two have faint grid lines like windows or windowpanes. They look like windows floating on the water, or a memory of a house glimpsed through the haze. The paint is applied with a palette knife in soft, horizontal drags, so the colours blend gently and the edges stay loose and broken. It reads as an old brick town reflected in a canal, a faded memory of home, or the windows of a house seen through morning mist.
