Contemporary Abstract Expressionism | Turquoise Harbour

This painting has the feel of a waterfront town reflected in rippling water. Turquoise and teal set the mood, mixed with large areas of white and pale sky blue, so the whole canvas feels cool, fresh, and full of light. Two dark clusters sit across the middle, one on the left and a larger one on the right. They are built from navy, charcoal, and black in short vertical and horizontal strokes, like buildings, boats, or trees crowded along a shore. Warm ochre and amber glow through them in small horizontal bands, like lit windows or late sunlight catching on walls. A brighter patch of gold sits in the upper right, beside touches of deep cobalt and violet. The top of the canvas is open and bright, mostly white with soft blue, and a few hints of peach and apricot in the upper left. The lower third fades into pale grey-blue and white, with the dark shapes from above dripping down in long vertical streaks, like their reflection trembling on the water. The paint is applied with a palette knife and dragged mostly downward, so the edges are broken and the layers show through, giving the surface a lively, shimmering texture. It reads as a harbour town mirrored in a canal, a city skyline on a bright, misty morning, or a memory of a place by the water.
