Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Whirlwind

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This is the loudest and most colourful painting of the set. A broad ribbon of white swirls through the middle in a loose S-curve or spiral, sweeping in from the upper left, looping around the right side, and curling back toward the centre. Everything else seems to spin around it. The colour is full strength: lemon yellow, lime green, bright cerulean blue, and deep navy, with rust and brick red along the bottom and left edges. Small touches of pink and magenta show up inside the white, and a few bold black strokes near the centre add weight and sharpen the sense of rotation. The paint is thick and pushed around with a lot of energy, so the surface feels restless and alive. It reads like a whirlpool, a storm seen from above, or a wave rolling through a tropical landscape. There is also something playful about it, like a garden in a strong wind.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
