Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I North Sea Light

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, giving it depth and a real sense of movement.

This is a dramatic seascape. A wide stormy sky fills the upper two-thirds, painted in sweeping strokes of grey, slate, and soft blue, with streaks of white curving across it. The strokes fan out from the centre, so the clouds seem to be rushing toward you. In the middle of the sky, patches of gold and yellow break through the dark cloud, as if the sun were just behind it. Below them, a bright band of white glows above the horizon, and faint vertical lines drop down from the cloud like distant rain. A dark line of charcoal and plum marks the horizon. Beneath it, the sea is deep navy and teal, with light catching on the water in flashes of white and gold. The foreground darkens to grey and brown, with a few more gold flecks scattered along it like light on wet sand. The paint is applied with a knife in long, fast horizontal sweeps, which gives the sky its movement and the sea its flat, wide feel. The gold is thick and textured and stands out from the smoother greys. It reads as a North Sea coast on a stormy evening, with the sun breaking through just before the rain arrives.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
