Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Saffron and Shadow

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting balances warm and dark tones on a pale background. Most of the canvas is off-white, cream, and light grey, dragged downward in long vertical strokes so it looks like rain or old weathered plaster. A large mass of black sits in the upper right, the heaviest shape in the painting. Around it, patches of golden yellow and mustard break through, and grey streaks run down from it toward the bottom. Inside the black, a rust-red block stands upright, with a strip of ochre directly beneath it, like a door or a lit window in a dark building. On the left, warm colour takes over. Ochre and saffron yellow drip down in loose vertical streaks across the lower half, and a dark burgundy triangle sits on the left side, echoed by a thinner burgundy streak lower down. Soft pink appears in the top left corner. The paint is pulled downward with a knife or scraper throughout, so every colour seems to run and fade, and the layers underneath show through. It reads as a city street in the rain at dusk, autumn leaves against a dark sky, or old painted walls weathered over time.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
