Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Autumn Falls

This painting has a strong upward energy. Two dark, rough forms rise from the lower part of the canvas, one leaning in from the left centre and a smaller one on the right, and both burst at their tops into warm colour: golden ochre, mustard, and burnt orange, with soft blush pink between them. They look like trees in autumn, flames, or flowers opening. The background is cool and misty: sage green and grey-green across the top, soft grey-blue on the right, and plenty of thick white swirling around the central forms like spray or cloud. A dark band of charcoal runs in from the left edge and a dark arch curves over on the right, framing the lower centre. At the bottom, a patch of vivid cobalt blue sits beneath the arch, the only strong cool colour in the painting. It works like water or a glimpse of sky through an opening, and it balances the warm ochre above. The paint is thick and layered, laid on with a knife in rough, broken strokes. The gold areas are especially textured, with raised edges that catch the light, while the background is smoother and more blended. It reads as autumn trees above a waterfall, a cliff glowing in late sun over the sea, or a fire burning in the mist.
