Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Wetland Light

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This is a moody, low-lying landscape with a strong horizontal structure. A band of gold runs across the canvas just above the middle, separating a misty sky from dark, marshy land and water below. The upper half is a soft, hazy sky of white, silver, and smoky grey, blurred as if seen through fog or drizzle. A thin strip of warm copper and bronze glows along the very top edge, and faint touches of olive and pale blue drift through the cloud. Just above the gold line, small dark marks suggest distant shrubs or a low tree line. Below the gold, the land drops into deep navy and near-black, then opens into layers of moss green, teal, rust, and dark blue, like wet grass, peat, and channels of water. Toward the bottom, bright aqua and white flash across the surface like light catching on pools. The paint is thick and dragged sideways with a knife, especially in the lower half, which is rough, layered, and heavily textured. The sky is softer and more blended. It reads as a Dutch wetland or moor on a grey day, with a low band of light breaking along the horizon.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
