Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Sea Breeze

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This is a fresh, windswept seascape. Long diagonal streaks of white cloud sweep across the sky from lower left to upper right, against patches of turquoise, sky blue, and soft grey. A few warm hints of cream and pale gold glow through near the horizon, and darker slate grey gathers on the right, as if weather were moving in. A slightly tilted horizon line runs across the middle, edged with a thin dark band of distant land or cloud. Below it, the sea is lively and choppy, painted in teal, cobalt, and deep blue with darker troughs between the waves. Small white crests and highlights are scattered across the water, catching the light. In the foreground, a strip of rocky shore runs along the bottom, in dark brown, rust, and charcoal with touches of ochre and blue, as if you were standing on the rocks looking out to sea. The paint is applied with brush and knife in energetic strokes: diagonal in the sky, horizontal and broken in the water, so the whole scene feels full of wind and movement. It reads as a rugged coastline on a breezy day, the North Sea under racing clouds, or a view from a rocky headland.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
