Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Harvest Horizon

This is the most clearly landscape-like painting you’ve shared. A sharp black line runs straight across the canvas about two-thirds of the way down and divides it into sky and land. The sky takes up most of the space. It moves from deep cobalt and violet-blue at the top to a pale, hazy blue near the horizon, with a soft white cloud glowing in the centre. Flecks of gold are scattered across the upper corners, like leaves, stars, or sunlight catching on old plaster. Below the black line, a band of bright gold-yellow lies along the horizon, then darkens into ochre, bronze, and deep brown toward the bottom. The paint here is blended in loose horizontal sweeps, with shadows drifting across it like clouds passing over a field. The surface is covered in fine raised lines and creases, which give it an aged, weathered look, like a fresco. It reads as a wide, flat field under an enormous sky, very close to the Dutch polder landscape, with a line of distant land or dyke at the horizon.
