Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Autumn Still Life

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This is the warmest and most dramatic of the group. The palette is all earth and fire: burnt sienna, rust, deep red, and dark umber, cut through with thick strokes of white and soft peach. The left side is pale and airy, almost bleached, while the right side deepens into saturated red and near-black. The painting moves from light to heat as you read across it. The brushwork is bold and fast. Short, chunky strokes pile up in the centre and lower right, where white marks tumble over the dark like petals, rubble, or crumpled paper. Curved sweeps in the upper left soften the energy, and long dark verticals on the right give it structure. A dark mass in the lower centre anchors everything. It has a still-life quality without showing anything literal. You could read it as flowers on a table in a dim room, embers and ash, or autumn leaves in low light.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
