Creative Direction to Abstract, Realism, Contemporary Art
I’m Brijesh Bhardwaj, a contemporary artist living and working in Amsterdam since 2019. I came to painting through design. After studying Commercial & Advertising Design at the University of Art Delhi, I spent 20 years in advertising, working with agencies including FCB, McCann, Ogilvy, Dentsu, Rediffusion, and Boost in Europe. Throughout my professional carrier my work won several advertising, digital & social media awards, and my childhood love for art and sketching taught me most of what I know about colour, composition, and how an image holds someone’s attention.
Moving to the Netherlands gave me the space to paint full time. After two decades of working to a brief, I now work without one. My paintings are abstract & realistic, but they begin with nature and memory. The Dutch landscape is a constant influence: the flat horizons, the water, the changing light. I don’t paint places as they look. I paint how I remember them, and those memories often blend with ones I carry from anywhere the globe.
I work in acrylic, oil, water colour and mixed media, building each piece in layers with brushes, palette knives, and textured materials. I experiment constantly, and each painting tends to open the way to the next.
Texture is the value addition to my work. I build each painting in layers, then scrape, drag, and press into the surface so the earlier layers show through. Thick paint sits next to areas so thin that the weave of the canvas becomes part of the image. I also work with mesh, pressing it into wet paint or printing through it, which leaves fine grids across the surface. The result is something you want to look at up close as well as from across the room, and it changes with the light through the day.

My work combines elements of realism and expressionism, resulting in richly layered compositions characterised by expressive textures, earthy colour palettes, and a distinctive visual signature.
Nature serves as a constant source of inspiration. Rather than depicting landscapes literally, he interprets natural forms, colours, and rhythms through a contemporary perspective. His artworks explore the emotional connection between people and the natural world, creating compositions filled with depth, movement, and atmosphere.
Many of his works incorporate sculptural textures that add a tactile, three-dimensional quality. These surfaces interact with changing light and perspective, allowing each artwork to reveal new details and expressions throughout the day.

Colour, Texture & Emotion
Since 2019, I’ve shown my work internationally in galleries and at art fairs, and my paintings are now part of private collections. I paint with real spaces in mind, both homes and commercial interiors. I want each piece to bring warmth and character to a room, and to still feel right there years from now.
Every painting is a way for me to explore colour, texture, movement, and emotion. I hope each one starts a conversation with the person looking at it, and invites them to see nature in a fresh way that feels personal to them.
I don’t try to copy the natural world. I paint how it feels to me. I want my paintings to change the mood of a space and to stay with the people who live with them.
