Contemporary Abstract Expressionism I Frozen Lake at Dusk

Price range: €299.00 through €1,699.00

Painted in acrylic, oil, and mixed media on canvas, this piece is built up layer by layer with brush and palette knife. Loose drips run through the surface, adding depth and a real sense of movement, and the work is finished to a refined, gallery-quality standard.

This painting is cool and misty, with a quiet winter feel. Most of the canvas is white, silver, and soft grey, with pale sky blue showing through in places, laid on in a rough, speckled texture like frost or snow. The upper half is bright and hazy. Thin dark vertical lines hang from the top left like icicles, reeds, or rain, while the upper right corner darkens into charcoal and black, with a small patch of rust and amber glowing on the right edge. Just below the middle, a dark horizon runs across the canvas in black and charcoal, lit along its upper edge with streaks of copper, ochre, and burnt orange, like the last warm light on a distant shoreline. Faint orange lines echo it higher up in the white. Below the horizon, the lower half reflects the scene. On the left, dark vertical streaks drop down from the shoreline like the reflection of trees or posts in water. Across the centre, patches of bright sky blue shine through the grey and white, like clear water or ice. More copper appears on the right, and the bottom edge darkens again. The paint is applied with a palette knife in short, dry strokes, so the surface is rough, layered, and broken, like weathered ice. It reads as a frozen lake at dusk, a winter shoreline with the last light on the horizon, or a misty canal in the cold.

This painting is made with acrylic paint, built up in many layers on canvas. The early layers are acrylic. It dries quickly, which makes it possible to lay down colour, add texture, and keep building without waiting. These first layers set out the main shapes and colours of the composition. Different tools leave different marks. Loose, expressive brushstrokes give the painting its energy and direction. The palette knife is used to press thick paint onto the surface, scrape it back, and drag it across earlier layers, leaving ridges, broken edges, and places where the colour underneath shows through. In some areas the paint is thinned and allowed to drip and run down the canvas, adding a sense of movement that can’t be fully planned. Thin, translucent washes sit alongside thick, opaque paint. Where the washes are, light passes through to the layers below and the colour glows. Where the paint is thick, it catches the light and casts tiny shadows, so the surface changes as you move around it and as the light in the room shifts during the day. Together, these layers give the painting its depth, movement, and rich texture, and a finish that feels contemporary and alive.
